Thriving as an Audio Engineer in the Age of AI

Audio engineers are facing a tough market these days. We hear stories of engineers with decades of experience mixing award-winning records losing work and clients. As automated plugins and AI tools advance, clients who once needed to hire engineers can now get surprisingly good results from increasingly capable technologies. At the same time, these tools have lowered the barrier to entry into audio engineering, bringing more engineers into an increasingly competitive market.

AI is putting real pressure on audio engineering. Tools that once took years to master can now handle cleanup, tuning, editing, stem separation, EQ, dynamics, and aspects of mixing and mastering. But audio engineering isn’t disappearing. What’s changing is what we value in an engineer.

Here are a few observations and recommendations based on decades of working in and around music technology and production.

Some Observations

Technical skill is becoming the floor, not the differentiator

For most of recorded music history, technical expertise defined a professional engineer — operating a console, choosing microphones, shaping dynamics, building a polished mix. That took years to learn.

AI is changing that. As more of the technical workflow gets automated, those skills become less scarce. The hard part isn’t running a compressor anymore. It’s deciding whether to use it at all, and whether the result serves the song.

A 2026 survey of over 1,100 music creators found routine technical tasks were the most automatable, while musicality, critical listening, and creative direction were seen as more durable.

The question used to be: can you make a technically good mix? Software can increasingly answer that. The better question is: can you determine what the music actually needs? A technically “better” vocal isn’t always the right one, and a perfectly controlled drum take can lose the character that made it compelling.

From operator to interpreter

An operator knows how to execute a process. An interpreter understands what the process is supposed to accomplish.

This matters most with artists, who rarely give technical instructions — a vocal should feel “more intimate,” a chorus should feel “bigger.” Those are artistic intentions, and the engineer has to translate them into technical decisions. As AI generates more viable options, that interpretive role only gets more valuable.

Abundance changes the job

AI doesn’t just speed up production, it makes the number of viable outcomes enormous. That’s a paradox: when competent results become abundant, choosing among them becomes the scarce, valuable skill.

Picture two engineers given ten solid mixes. One picks the most technically impressive version. The other listens for what the artist is trying to say and knows which imperfections belong — asking which version serves the song, what a choice adds or costs, what should stay imperfect. AI generates the alternatives; the value is in knowing what to do with them.

The human premium

As AI-generated music becomes more common, human-made music may take on a different kind of value — not because humans always make better music, but because intention, aesthetics, and identity become part of the product. The premium won’t go to the engineer with the cleanest mix. It’ll go to the one who exhibits these qualities.

Some Recommendations

Strengthen musicianship.

Many engineers are already musicians. But some entered the industry primarily through technology and hands-on experience rather than formal musical training.

For those engineers especially, developing musicianship is increasingly important.

Understanding harmony, rhythm, form, arrangement, performance, and musical structure gives engineers a stronger basis for artistic decisions. It helps them hear a production as music, rather than simply as a collection of audio signals.

The goal isn’t to turn every engineer into a concert musician. It is to develop the musical vocabulary and sensitivity needed to understand why a production choice works.

Strengthen communication and collaborative judgement.

If the engineer is increasingly an interpreter, understanding the artist’s intention becomes central. Instead of asking only what sound the artist wants, learn what they want the listener to experience.

A/B comparisons can be particularly useful. Rather than simply presenting the engineer’s preferred version, sit down with the artist and compare alternatives together. Even better, let the artist control the comparison:

Which one feels more like what you are trying to say?

That question can improve the creative decision while helping the engineer understand how the artist thinks and hears. This may lead to more revisions and more time spent communicating with the artists, but it also broadens the role of engineers and integrates the role better into the overall production.

Develop a distinctive artistic point of view

Technical skills can be learned, automated, and increasingly commoditized. Artistic judgment is different. Engineers should therefore develop a clear sense of what they believe makes music compelling.

This doesn’t mean every engineer needs a recognizable “sound” or a signature mixing style. It means developing the ability to make intentional choices based on musical and artistic priorities rather than simply following technical conventions or whatever an automated tool recommends.

What do you choose to emphasize? What do you deliberately leave imperfect? When is a technically cleaner result actually less musical? What makes one artist’s recording feel authentic while another’s feels over-produced?

A distinctive point of view develops through listening broadly, studying music, working with different artists, experimenting, and reflecting on the decisions that produce the strongest results.

As AI makes technically competent results increasingly abundant, taste becomes a differentiator. Artists will have many ways to make something sound good. The engineer’s value increasingly comes from knowing what kind of “good” is right for the music—and having the artistic judgment to get there.

The future isn’t less technical. It’s more artistic.

The actions recommended in this article will probably take you a lot of time. You need time to further your music training, spend more time communicating with clients, and take yet more time to compare across mix revisions. Yes, you probably will also need to produce a few more revisions. But the return is also clear – your role as the engineer is now broadened, you integrate better into the overall music production cycle, and you provide much more value than just a standalone, technical (and probably replaceable) process. This makes the role of engineers that much more resilient and sustaining.
